Final Fantasy X also received great reviews from the media and critics in North America. IGN rated the game 9.5/10, praising the games voice actors and innovation in gameplay. IGN also stated that it was the most visually appealing Final Fantasy game to date and that every possible visual aspect of the game was much improved over previous installments. Gamespot rated the game a similar 9.3/10. GameSpot praised the game's storyline, calling it surprisingly complex, its ending satisfying, and its avoidance of role-playing game clichés commendable. Gamespot also praised the music, feeling it was "diverse and well suited to the various scenes in the game".

Final Fantasy X uses a different method of character development than from traditional RPG games. In traditional RPG games, characters would increase their stats by a levelling up type system by defeating enemies in battle or by completing a quest. Each level a character would gain, the character would gain a certain amount of stats and sometimes learn a new ability.
Final Fantasy X puts a bit of a spin on character development with the use of the Sphere Grid. The Sphere Grid is an intertwined map of abilities and stats that characters can obtain by gaining ability points and collecting specific types of spheres. Ability points are used to move along the sphere grid and are obtained by defeating enemies in battle. Spheres are items that are used to unlock the nodes on the sphere grid to obtain abilities and stats. They are found in treasure chests as well as by defeating enemies. Since the Sphere Grid is intertwined, each character in the game is able to learn every ability in the game.

    Battle System
Final Fantasy X also uses a different type of battle system that has not been seen in other Final Fantasy games before. In previous Final Fantasy games, an active time battle system was used during battles. Active time battle was a system where each character had to wait a certain amount of time before it could make another action. Enemies would be able to attack you while you wait for the time bar to fill up, or, while you make a decision.
